How we compared these tools
We checked official product pages, documentation and pricing on November 1, 2026. We compared the work each product can complete, the selected plan, output, review requirements and total operating cost. The numbered order is reading order, not a measured performance ranking.
OwnerClue publishes this guide and is included below. This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on accuracy, speed or conversion benchmark. Every product image is labeled by source and date. We have not inferred performance from a screenshot.
| What we compared | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Missing sales step | Buy discovery, research, sending or CRM capacity for an identified gap. |
| Inputs and outputs | Match your existing list or enquiry source to the required result. |
| Required plan | Verify integrations, seats and the actual capacity needed. |
| Overlap | Check data, enrichment and sequences already available elsewhere. |
| Operating effort | Include setup, review, sending prerequisites and ongoing ownership. |
Find the missing step before buying
A sending tool will not define a useful audience. A larger database will not fix missed follow-ups. Start by identifying the output you cannot produce, the person who will use it, and the next action it should enable.
This shortlist includes discovery, enrichment, sending and CRM tools. Compare them on the job they perform; they are not interchangeable versions of the same product.
Five tools for different lead generation jobs
Each product uses the same quick-fact format. Read its fit and limitation together, then compare the price and workflow below.
1. Apollo: data and outreach together

| Price | Basic $65/seat/month; $49/seat/month equivalent annually |
|---|---|
| Included allowance | 2,500 credits/month on monthly billing; 30,000/year upfront on annual billing |
| Best for | An individual seller needing contact data and outbound work together. |
| Free / trial limits | 75 credits/seat/month; Free includes two sequences with feature limits |
| Key feature | Contact/account discovery, sequences, research and CRM integrations. |
| Main limitation | Seat costs and action-specific credits matter; confirm coverage against your own market. |
Apollo combines contact and account discovery with sequences, research, enrichment and sales-management features. It is a useful first shortlist for sellers who want to build a list and work it inside one platform. Official product overview.
| Plan | Monthly billing per seat | Annual equivalent per seat/month | Included credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 75 per seat/month |
| Basic | $65 | $49 | 2,500/month on monthly billing; 30,000/year upfront on annual billing |
| Professional | $99 | $79 | 4,000/month on monthly billing; 48,000/year upfront on annual billing |
Annual equivalents require annual billing. The published credit costs differ by action: an email uses one credit, a phone number eight, and enrichment one to eight. Basic includes sequences and CRM integrations; mailbox and other limits vary by plan. Official pricing.
Why buy it first: you need several outbound functions and want to establish whether one platform covers them before adding specialist subscriptions.
When to compare another approach: the purchase depends on a specific local-business research process or source requirements. Apollo also lists Google Maps Business Search, so the distinction is not that it cannot find local companies. Inspect a sample and compare the next action your team needs to take.
Avoid duplicate spending: review the sequencing, research and enrichment already included before subscribing to a second tool for those jobs.
2. OwnerClue: local business prospect research

| Price | Starter $35/month |
|---|---|
| Included allowance | 10,000 monthly credits; website research included in Maps searches |
| Best for | A local agency reviewing public contacts and supporting owner/founder evidence before export. |
| Free / trial limits | 20 one-time trial credits, valid 14 days; no card required |
| Key feature | Business discovery, website research and inspectable source evidence in one workflow. |
| Main limitation | Fields can be missing. No mailbox-delivery verification or campaign sending. |
OwnerClue discovers local businesses by industry and location, researches their public websites, and retains source evidence for available contacts and supported owner/founder names. A web agency researching roofers in selected cities can inspect its shortlist before deciding whom to contact.
Starter costs $35/month for 10,000 credits. Agency costs $89 for 50,000; Scale costs $269 for 200,000. Search uses one credit per new unique business delivered within a search or campaign, including website enrichment in that search. Separate domain enrichment and optional phone checks have different credit rules. The no-card trial includes 20 credits for 14 days. Current plans and billing definitions.
Why buy it first: you have a clear local-business audience but lack a company list and public ways to reach those businesses.
When to choose another capability: you need a sales-engagement platform, guaranteed personal-contact coverage or mailbox-delivery verification. A sourced public contact is not automatically a sales-qualified lead. Our lead qualification guide explains the difference.
Avoid duplicate spending: when public website contacts meet the task, identify missing fields before enriching every row through another provider. If you already have domains, use domain enrichment rather than repeating company discovery.
OwnerClue supports a dedicated Instantly CSV format. This is a file handoff, without native synchronization; retain full evidence separately. CSV workflow details. For a narrower comparison, read our Google Maps scraper guide.
Try an industry-and-city search →20 trial credits · 14 days · no card required. Inspect public contacts and source evidence; missing fields stay empty.
3. Clay: custom research and enrichment

| Price | Launch $185/month; $167/month equivalent annually |
|---|---|
| Included allowance | Launch starts with 15,000 Actions and 2,500 Data Credits/month on monthly billing |
| Best for | An operations team reusing custom research and selective multi-provider enrichment. |
| Free / trial limits | 500 Actions and 100 Data Credits/month; up to 200 rows/table |
| Key feature | Conditional research logic and enrichment from multiple sources. |
| Main limitation | Actions and Data Credits are separate; CRM/HTTP integrations require Growth. |
Clay combines multi-provider enrichment, AI research through Claygent and configurable workflows. Consider it when a standard database filter does not supply the information that determines your target list.
For example, a team may need to research a company, evaluate several conditions, fill only the missing fields, and route the result based on its findings.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual equivalent per month | Starting monthly capacity on monthly billing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | 500 Actions and 100 Data Credits |
| Launch | $185 | $167 | 15,000 Actions and 2,500 Data Credits |
| Growth | $495 | $446 | 40,000 Actions and 6,000 Data Credits |
Annual equivalents require annual billing. Actions measure platform activity, while Data Credits buy data and AI usage. Free supports up to 200 rows per table. Growth adds capabilities including CRM integrations, HTTP API integrations and webhook automation. Official plan details.
Why buy it first: you understand the research logic you need and expect to reuse it.
When to use a simpler workflow: one search and an export already supply the required fields. Building and maintaining a custom workflow is additional work, even when it is flexible.
Avoid duplicate spending: set conditions for enrichment. Running every research step on every row can consume capacity without improving the fields that change your sales decision. Read what lead enrichment does before defining those conditions.
4. Instantly: email outreach operations

| Price | Outreach Growth $47/month |
|---|---|
| Included allowance | 1,000 uploaded contacts and 5,000 emails/month; Credits are a separate subscription |
| Best for | A team with a prospect source that needs to operate email campaigns. |
| Free / trial limits | 14-day Outreach trial: 250 uploaded contacts and 1,000 emails; no card required |
| Key feature | Dedicated campaign operations with connected sending accounts. |
| Main limitation | Uploaded contacts, sending capacity and data/AI credits are different allowances. |
Instantly offers email outreach, lead data and AI capabilities through modular plans. Outreach is relevant when the missing capability is running campaigns and managing connected sending accounts.
Outreach and Instantly Credits are separate subscriptions, although bundles are also offered.
| Subscription | Monthly price | Included capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Outreach Growth | $47 | 1,000 uploaded contacts; 5,000 emails/month |
| Outreach Hypergrowth | $97 | 25,000 uploaded contacts; 125,000 emails/month |
| Instantly Credits Nano | $9 | 150 credits/month |
| Instantly Credits Growth | $47–$77 | 1,500–2,000 credits/month |
Credits fund data and AI actions. Uploaded-contact capacity is not an allowance of newly discovered contacts, and sending capacity is a separate unit. The published Outreach trial includes 250 uploaded contacts and 1,000 emails for 14 days, without a card. Official pricing and limits.
Why buy it first: you have an appropriate prospect source and need a dedicated email workflow.
When to solve another problem first: you cannot define your audience or explain why the companies on the list are relevant. Sending software does not resolve that uncertainty.
Avoid duplicate spending: when another tool supplies the list, assess whether you also need Credits. Include domains, mailboxes and any independent validation in the budget. Do not assume unlimited connected accounts means unlimited contacts or sends.
5. HubSpot: lead capture and follow-up

| Price | Free edition $0 |
|---|---|
| Included allowance | Up to two free users; feature-specific limits apply |
| Best for | A small team losing enquiries or follow-up tasks in spreadsheets. |
| Free / trial limits | Ongoing free CRM and selected lead-capture tools; not unlimited automation |
| Key feature | Contact records, deals, tasks, forms and lead capture in one system. |
| Main limitation | Advanced automation and paid packages require a separate plan assessment. |
Sometimes the gap is losing people who have already enquired, replied or agreed to a next step. HubSpot's free CRM provides contact management, deals, tasks and imports, alongside free lead-capture tools such as forms and live chat. Official free CRM overview.
The free edition costs $0 and supports up to two free users. Features have individual limits; this is not unlimited marketing or sales automation. Official Free Tools catalog.
Why start here: you need a consistent place to record contacts, capture enquiries and assign follow-up.
When to evaluate a different purchase: the immediate need is a fresh city-and-industry company list. Lead management and company discovery solve different tasks. Advanced automation or additional users also requires a separate assessment of HubSpot's paid packages.
Avoid duplicate spending: inspect the pipeline tools available in your current subscriptions before introducing another system of record.
Side-by-side comparison
Use this task-fit matrix to narrow the list. It is not a star rating: we have not run a common accuracy or delivery benchmark.
| Tool | Best for | Key capability | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apollo | An individual seller needing contact data and outbound work together. | Contact/account discovery, sequences, research and CRM integrations. | Seat costs and action-specific credits matter; confirm coverage against your own market. |
| OwnerClue | A local agency reviewing public contacts and supporting owner/founder evidence before export. | Business discovery, website research and inspectable source evidence in one workflow. | Fields can be missing. No mailbox-delivery verification or campaign sending. |
| Clay | An operations team reusing custom research and selective multi-provider enrichment. | Conditional research logic and enrichment from multiple sources. | Actions and Data Credits are separate; CRM/HTTP integrations require Growth. |
| Instantly | A team with a prospect source that needs to operate email campaigns. | Dedicated campaign operations with connected sending accounts. | Uploaded contacts, sending capacity and data/AI credits are different allowances. |
| HubSpot | A small team losing enquiries or follow-up tasks in spreadsheets. | Contact records, deals, tasks, forms and lead capture in one system. | Advanced automation and paid packages require a separate plan assessment. |
Prices, free access and limits
USD prices distinguish monthly billing, annual equivalents and usage charges. Annual equivalents require an annual commitment. Check capacity in the unit the vendor bills.
| Tool | Free / trial limits | Paid starting point | Included capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apollo | 75 credits/seat/month; Free includes two sequences with feature limits | Basic $65/seat/month; $49/seat/month equivalent annually | 2,500 credits/month on monthly billing; 30,000/year upfront on annual billing |
| OwnerClue | 20 one-time trial credits, valid 14 days; no card required | Starter $35/month | 10,000 monthly credits; website research included in Maps searches |
| Clay | 500 Actions and 100 Data Credits/month; up to 200 rows/table | Launch $185/month; $167/month equivalent annually | Launch starts with 15,000 Actions and 2,500 Data Credits/month on monthly billing |
| Instantly | 14-day Outreach trial: 250 uploaded contacts and 1,000 emails; no card required | Outreach Growth $47/month | 1,000 uploaded contacts and 5,000 emails/month; Credits are a separate subscription |
| HubSpot | Ongoing free CRM and selected lead-capture tools; not unlimited automation | Free edition $0 | Up to two free users; feature-specific limits apply |
A credit, an uploaded contact, an email send and a CRM user are different billing units. Annual equivalents require an annual commitment. Confirm the actual plan that contains the required feature; a low entry price does not establish the total cost of a working stack.
Build the smallest useful tool stack
- Identify the missing step
- Check current capabilities
- Test one small workflow
- Add only the missing tool
Apollo includes outreach and enrichment. Clay includes campaign capabilities on paid plans. Instantly sells lead data as well as sending software. OwnerClue's Maps search includes website research. Categories overlap; product names alone do not tell you which subscriptions are necessary.
Before purchasing, write down:
- The task your existing tools cannot complete.
- The output the new tool must produce.
- The allowance that limits expected usage.
- Additional subscriptions, review or setup required.
- Who maintains the workflow and records the outcome.
If you cannot name the missing task, test the tools you already have first. Keep a record of usable prospects and review time rather than treating purchased credits as pipeline.
Which should you choose?
If you sell services to local businesses
Start with company discovery and a clear definition of a suitable prospect. OwnerClue can support research; add sending software when you are ready to operate outreach and track exclusions and replies.
As a subscription illustration, OwnerClue Starter plus Instantly Outreach Growth costs $82/month. This excludes domains, mailboxes, independent verification, taxes and other services. The capacities differ: 10,000 research credits do not expand Instantly Growth's 1,000 uploaded-contact limit.
Use the B2B list-building guide to define the record and review process before scaling. A tool combination is useful only when someone owns the handoff.
If one seller needs a broad outbound platform
Evaluate Apollo before assembling separate data, sequencing and pipeline subscriptions. Basic is $65 for one seat on monthly billing; the $49 annual equivalent requires annual billing. Check its data against your market and add a specialist only after finding a concrete gap.
If targeting depends on custom research
Prototype the logic in Clay with a small sample. Define the fields, conditions that trigger another research step, and rejection criteria. Measure both Actions and Data Credits before expanding the workflow.
If enquiries arrive but follow-up fails
Assign each lead an owner, status and next action. HubSpot's free edition may fit a two-person starting team. Buying another prospect database does not repair missed follow-ups. Our CRM data cleansing guide covers a related issue when existing records are duplicated or incomplete.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best B2B lead generation tool for a small business?
Choose around the gap. Evaluate Apollo for combined data and outbound work, OwnerClue for local-business research, Clay for custom enrichment, Instantly for outreach operations, and HubSpot for capturing and managing enquiries.
Do more credits mean more qualified leads?
No. Credits fund product actions. Qualification also depends on audience fit, available information and a relevant need. Define the qualification process separately from data acquisition.
Can OwnerClue replace Apollo or Instantly?
It can handle local-business discovery and public-contact research. It does not replace every contact-database, sequencing, calling or sales-management capability. CSV handoff is not native synchronization.
Should every business buy an enrichment platform?
No. Add enrichment when a missing field changes whom you pursue or how you contact them. The information already available may be enough for the current task.
Test the workflow before committing
Choose a tool that completes a defined piece of work. Expand the stack when a specific limitation appears.
For teams targeting local businesses, the first useful step may be a small, reviewable list. Search your industry and location, inspect the available contacts and sources, and decide what the workflow still needs. Already have websites? Enrich the existing list.
