URL to domain extractor
Turn a list of website URLs into clean hostnames. Paste one URL or domain per line, choose your options, and copy or export the result.
How to extract a domain from a URL
Paste website URLs or bare domains, with one item on each line. Both https://example.com/contact and example.com/contact are accepted. Select whether to remove a leading www and whether to keep repeated hostnames, then choose Extract domains.
Copy gives you one hostname per line. The CSV download keeps the first source URL beside each output hostname, so you can trace a result back to its original row. Skipped rows have their own review list and download. A list with no matches produces no empty CSV.
Hostname or root domain?
This tool extracts the hostname, which is the part between a URL’s scheme and its port or path. It removes the scheme, path, query string and fragment. It preserves other subdomains: shop.example.co.uk stays shop.example.co.uk.
It does not calculate the registrable domain, sometimes called the root domain. Removing the last two labels would turn example.co.uk into co.uk and can combine separate businesses hosted on the same platform. For that reason, this tool never collapses subdomains automatically.
| Input | Output with www removed |
|---|---|
https://www.example.com/contact?ref=list | example.com |
https://shop.example.co.uk/about | shop.example.co.uk |
example.org:8443/team | example.org |
What is normalized, and what is skipped?
Hostnames are lowercased, internationalized hostnames use their ASCII (Punycode) form, and a trailing hostname dot is removed. The optional www setting removes only a leading www. HTTP and HTTPS URLs with a port are accepted; the output omits the port. Surrounding quotes, brackets and common pasted-list punctuation are trimmed.
IP addresses, single-label names such as localhost, non-HTTP schemes, URLs with embedded login credentials, and rows containing spaces are skipped. This is a URL parsing tool: it does not check DNS, website availability, company identity or whether a domain can receive email. Paste a URL column rather than an entire CSV table.
Use the list for business research
A cleaned website list is a useful starting point for matching exported business records and reviewing duplicate website entries. Keep the original business name and location: two branches can share one hostname, and one company can use several domains.
If your next task is to research public business emails, phone numbers or owner evidence from the websites, continue with domain enrichment. That is a separate website research workflow; extracting a hostname alone does not discover a contact.
Can I extract domains without https://?
Yes. Bare domains and domains with paths are parsed as HTTPS URLs. Protocol-relative URLs starting with // are also supported. The tool does not connect to either HTTP or HTTPS websites.
Does this combine example.com and www.example.com?
Yes, when Remove leading www and Remove duplicates are selected. Other subdomains stay separate. Clear the www option if those hostnames need to remain distinct.
Can I upload this output to domain enrichment?
The CSV includes a domain column and the source URL. Review skipped rows and shared domains first, then use the existing website enrichment workflow to map the appropriate website column. Research coverage depends on what each public website contains.
